As we age, the skin of the upper eyelid can begin to droop and may eventually impair the field of vision. Although many upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) patients seek to eliminate this excess skin and fat for cosmetic reasons, some patients can also significantly improve their vision with this commonly performed procedure.

If your eyelids sag or droop to a degree that impedes your natural line of sight, upper blepharoplasty can restore your field of vision. When the upper eyelid begins to descend, the skin can begin to encroach upon your vision or push your lashes in front of the eye, blocking peripheral vision and narrowing your overall eyesight. An upper blepharoplasty can reverse these effects. As an additional benefit, some patients find they can more easily insert contact lenses after the procedure.

Depending upon your insurance plan, the cost of an upper blepharoplasty may be completely covered. A visual field test conducted by your ophthalmologist is typically the first step in determining your eligibility for this coverage, since this test can reveal if your upper blepharoplasty can be classified as a medical necessity.
